X out golf balls are golf balls that have a cosmetic defect.
There is often nothing wrong with the golf ball other than minor cosmetic imperfections such as a small ink mark out of place or a barely detectable scratch.
In fact, the defect is often so minor that most people would not be able to find it.
How X Outs Are Marked
They are typically marked with an “X” in some way.
Most manufacturers used to mark x out balls with three x’s over the brand name.
Nowadays, it is more common for a single X or the term “x-out” to be found on the side of the ball or somewhere near the brand name.
Who Should Use Them
X-out golf balls can be a great option for recreational golfers, those new to golf, or those on a budget.
The low price allows these players to play a better ball for much less money.
Mid handicappers and up can save a significant amount of money while playing a (likely) normally performing golf ball.
I say likely because while most x out balls have only a cosmetic issue, there is no way to be certain that it doesn’t have other issues from the manufacturing process.
Higher level players will never use x out balls except for practice.
Are They Allowed In Tournament Play?
No, they are not.
The USGA and R&A maintain a list of conforming golf balls, and x out golf balls are not on the list.
The reason being is that manufacturers do not submit their x out golf balls to the sport’s governing bodies, so they cannot be approved for play.
