Sand Wedge Loft: 54, 56, & 58 Degree Wedges

Sand Wedge Loft: 54, 56, & 58 Degree Wedges

Sand wedges typically have a loft of 54-58 degrees.

Most manufacturers carry three loft options for sand wedges: a 54 degree wedge, a 56 degree wedge, and a 58 degree wedge.

That said, wedges can easily be bent a degree stronger or weaker, depending on what you need.

A 56-degree wedge is by far the most common and versatile sand wedge loft:

  • It can easily be opened up to get an effective loft of 60+ degrees, similar to a lob wedge.
  • A 56° wedge is much easier to hit full shots consistently with than a 60° wedge.
  • Most mid-handicappers and up would be better off ditching their lob wedge and carrying nothing higher than a 56° sand wedge.

Sand Wedge Distance

The average PGA pro can carry a sand wedge 115-120 yards.

The average amateur carries a sand wedge anywhere from 70-110 yards.

That said, accuracy and consistency are much more important factors than distance when choosing SW loft.

Sand Wedge Bounce

The bounce of a wedge is the angle between the leading edge of the club and the lowest point of the sole of the club.

There are three categories of bounce:

Low Bounce Wedges

  • 4-6°
  • Best for firm turf such as in desert or warm climates
  • Best for those with shallow attack angles

Mid Bounce Wedges

  • 7-10°
  • Best for the average golfer and works well with all swing types

High Bounce Wedges

  • > 10°
  • Best for softer turf and soft sand (wet climates like the Pacific Northwest)
  • Best for those with a steep angle of attack
  • Help to generate more spin around the greens

Most manufacturers carry 54–58-degree wedges with 8-12 degrees of bounce.
