8 Reasons Golf Is The Perfect Activity For Seniors

8 Reasons Golf Is The Perfect Activity For Seniors

Golf just may be the best retirement activity there is for overall health and wellness.

And it’s not just great for retirees. It’s perfect for all those looking to have fun, spend time outdoors, get some exercise, and spend time with friends.

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to maintain an active, healthy, and social lifestyle in order to keep our bodies and minds functioning well.

*While I’m no stranger to taking a cart, keep in mind that several of the following benefits are only realized if you walk.

Here are 8 ways that golf after 60 can improve your overall well-being:

1. Improves Physical Health

Golf is a low-impact sport that can improve cardiovascular endurance, improve balance, and strengthen muscles.

2. Boosts Mental Strength

Golf can be a great stress reliever (or, in my case, a great stress inducer). It can be a time to relax and enjoy time with friends. The social aspect of golf can greatly benefit seniors battling feelings of loneliness and isolation.

3. Promotes Socialization

Golf can be a highly social sport that allows seniors an opportunity to interact with others and make new friends. Many courses offer social events that provide seniors the chance to socialize and connect with others that share similar interests. Many golf clubs also have Men’s days and Women’s days.

4. Enhance Brain Function

Golf is, in many ways, more of a mental game than a physical one. It requires concentration, focus, and strategic thinking. Anything that engages our minds and keeps them sharp as we age is a good thing.

5. Provides A Sense Of Purpose

Golf is addictive and infuriating. For many seniors, golf provides a reason to get up in the morning. The desire to improve oneself is innate in all of us, and golf is a sport that allows for a never-ending pursuit of perfection. The thrill of hitting that perfect drive or iron is something that can help keep seniors motivated and engaged in life.

6. Reduces The Risk Of Chronic Diseases

Any type of regular physical activity has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases. Essentially, any consistent physical activity will help you live longer. Playing golf (and walking 5-8 miles per 18 holes) a couple of times per week will help seniors reduce their risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and obesity.

7. Improves Sleep

Studies show that regular exercise improves sleep quality and quantity. In other words, daily exercise can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

8. Increase Lifespan

Studies also show that regular physical activity reduces all-cause mortality. Translation: if you regularly exercise, you will very likely live longer. And not only longer, but you will have a much better quality of life as you age.
